Dave completed his undergraduate training in biology at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, USA in 1975. He subsequently began a program in pathobiology at the University of Connecticut in 1976, completing his MSc. thesis “Histology of the Striped Bass” in 1980. The thesis was published as Monograph No. 3 by the AFS in 1982. During his tenure at Connecticut Dave attended the USFWS Leetown Fish Disease Long Course in 1978-79 in West Virginia, USA. Dave received his PhD in aquaculture & fish health from the University of Idaho (1983) where he was a graduate student of the late Dr. Bill Klontz. Following his tenure in Idaho he travelled to Iceland to work at the Institute for Experimental Pathology as a US Fulbright Fellowship recipient. Following his year in Iceland Dave accepted a position as a research scientist in Scotland (1984-1988) where he worked on pollution induced anemia of wild salmon at the FRS Marine Laboratory in Aberdeen. In 1988 Dave was hired by the Atlantic Veterinary College and has since participated in fish health teaching, research and diagnostic services.
