I heard someone step through the office doorway with my other ear and turned to see Hailey and Jake sit down at a pair of computers on the other side of the room. Hailey smiled at me when she saw me look, while Jake stared at the blank screen and didn’t seem to register my presence. I pulled out my phone to pause the song, took out my other earbud, and pushed away from my desk, sending my chair swiveling towards them. “How did it go today?” I asked. Jake turned at the sound of my voice and looked at me with hollow, reddish eyes. His mouth twisted into a weak smile. “We were successful,” Hailey said apprehensively. “Was anyone hurt?” “Just one of the enemies.” At this, Jake’s smile vanished as he turned back to the blank computer screen and closed his eyes. “He’s okay now,” Hailey continued. “What about him,” I mouthed, nodding to Jake.
