Kari Barnes graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Mount Allison University, with a major in Commerce and minor in Psychology. After taking an elective HR Management course in her third year of university, she realized she wanted to pursue Human Resources as a career. She then continued her studies at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) and Holland College to obtain a joint Human Resource Management Program Certificate.

Following graduation, Kari started working in the private sector as a team leader and an HR professional with Sears Canada, based in Charlottetown, PEI. Kari worked over 5 years on the retail business and leadership side of Sears as well as an HR Leader and an Atlantic Regional HR manager. During this time, Kari obtained her Certified Human Resources Professional designation in 2008 (now known as the Chartered Professional in Human Resources or CPHR designation).

In 2010, Kari had the opportunity to join a global company, Invesco, which was growing its office and presence locally in Charlottetown. As the Human Resources Business Partner, and later as the Senior Human Resources Business Partner, she worked with the local leadership team over a 9 year period to grow the Invesco office from 115 to over 400 employees, while diversifying roles and career opportunities. Kari worked with local leadership, North American leaders, and global leaders at Invesco to improve recruitment and retention of employees, reduce turnover, increase employee and leadership
engagement, as well as promote an environment of continuous professional development, work excellence, and career growth.

Moreover, while working full-time with Invesco, Kari pursued her Master's of Business Administration from UPEI, and graduated in 2017. She was a Founding Director and Director at Large of the Chartered Professionals in Human Resources Prince Edward Island (CPHR PEI) in 2017 and 2018, along with
Chairing the Professional Development Committee.

In 2019, Kari had the opportunity to broaden her experience and work in the public sector. She accepted an opportunity as the Human Resources Advisor with the Recruitment and Retention Secretariat, Department of Health and Wellness with the Province of Prince Edward Island. She currently works in
partnership with the health system and health leaders to analyze, prioritize, and strategize recruitment and retention efforts, as well as workforce planning, in a data driven and evidence informed manner. Kari will be joining Health PEI in June, 2021, as the Organizational and Leadership Development Manager.

For the past 16 years, Kari has been passionate about educating and sharing the value of Human Resources as a strategic and integral partner of business leaders. She aims to foster a positive and evidence-based learning environment, as a Sessional Instructor, as well as to demonstrate the immense
value of effective Human Resources Management.
